Il generale separatista Grievous ha colpito al cuore la Repubblica rapendo da Coruscant il Cancelliere repubblicano Palpatine, che governa la Galassia da ormai tredici anni.
Signore della guerra massacrato in battaglia molto tempo prima, recuperato dal conte Dooku e da lui dotato di arti ed organi artificiali, Grievous divenne un temibile essere cibernetico, metà alieno e metà cyborg, addestrato nell'uso della spada laser. Egli risponde direttamente agli ordini del fantomatico Oscuro Signore dei Sith Darth Sidious. Nessuno sa, però, che Palpatine e Darth Sidious sono la stessa persona e che tutta la guerra dei cloni, compreso il "finto" rapimento, è volta a creare una situazione di disordine e caos per permettere al Cancelliere di acquisire sempre più potere raggiungendo così il suo vero scopo: fondare un Impero Galattico, come quello governato dai Sith millenni prima.
